DJ Speedsta says there are no celebrities in South Africa

DJ Speedsta

DJ Speedsta has stirred conversation online after sharing a blunt perspective on what fame really looks like in South Africa.

Speaking on his series Up to Speed with DJ Speedsta and across social media, the hip-hop figure challenged the idea of stardom, warning against inflated egos that often come with public recognition.

“Just because they see you on the screen, it doesn’t make you special,” he said. “Let’s be real, in South Africa there are no celebrities.”

He went on to contrast the local entertainment scene with the United States, where distance and exclusivity often amplify a star’s image.

Referencing Lil Baby, Speedsta explained how international fame is built on inaccessibility.

“In America, you might love Lil Baby and never see him because he lives in the hills and drives a Rolls-Royce. Fine, we understand that,” he said. “Here, you can meet anyone anywhere.”

His comments highlight how differently fame operates in Mzansi, where artists remain closely connected to everyday life.

Unlike their overseas counterparts, local stars are often spotted in public spaces, from shopping centres to social gatherings, making them more relatable and within reach.

Having worked alongside industry heavyweights like Cassper Nyovest and Nasty C, Speedsta has built his career without leaning into exclusivity.

His stance reflects both his personal approach to fame and a broader cultural reality.
