The long-running legal saga involving convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester has been delayed again, with his pre-trial proceedings now postponed to April 2027.

Thabo appeared virtually from prison on Friday, 28 August 2026, alongside his co-accused Dr Nandipha Magudumana and several other accused in the case. The latest postponement means the matter will remain before the courts for several more months before the next major stage of proceedings.
The case has attracted widespread attention since Thabo was discovered to have faked his death in prison and escaped from Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022.
Thabo Bester case postponed to April 2027
According to SABC News, the pre-trial hearing was postponed to April next year, when the accused are expected to return to court as preparations for the trial continue. The postponement adds another delay to a case that has already taken years to reach the trial stage.
Thabo and Nandipha are among those facing charges linked to his escape from prison and the events surrounding his elaborate scheme to fake his death.

How Thabo Bester escaped prison
Thabo was serving a life sentence for rape and murder when he escaped from Mangaung Correctional Centre in 2022.
Authorities initially believed that Thabo had died in a fire inside his prison cell. A burnt body was discovered in the cell, but investigations later established that the body was not Thabo’s.
The escape triggered a major investigation and raised serious questions about security and possible assistance from people inside and outside the prison.
Thabo was eventually tracked down in Tanzania in April 2023, where he was found with Nandipha. The pair were subsequently deported to South Africa and arrested in connection with the case.
Nandipha Magudumana and other accused
Nandipha, a medical doctor who was romantically linked to Thabo, faces charges alongside him.
The State alleges that she played a role in the escape and the events surrounding Thabo’s disappearance from prison. She has denied wrongdoing.
Several other accused are also facing charges in the matter, which has developed into one of South Africa’s most closely followed criminal cases.
The prosecution has been working through various pre-trial issues before the matter can proceed to a full trial.
Why the case has attracted so much attention
Thabo’s escape became a national talking point because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding it.
The fact that he managed to convince authorities that he had died before escaping from a maximum-security facility raised questions about prison security and the people who may have helped him.
His relationship with Nandipha and their life together after the escape also attracted intense public interest. The case has since generated documentaries, books and extensive media coverage.
For now, however, the accused will have to wait until April 2027 for the next significant court proceedings.
The latest postponement means the public will have to wait longer for the case to move closer to a full trial and for the allegations against Thabo, Nandipha and their co-accused to be tested in court.
