He is a genius: DJ Black Coffee’s academic qualifications stuns Mzansi

Black Coffee has been trending lately after bagging the Best Dance/Electric Album award for his album titled Subconsciously at the Grammy Awards. He is in the Guinness book of records for being the first South African DJ to win an international award. Coffee made a speech that left fans and the world questioning his academic qualifications after winning.

During his speech at Grammy Awards, Coffee struggled to speak his English fluently, making Mzansi interested in his level of education. The Dj is highly educated and has a degree to show for it; maybe what happened at The Grammy’s was stage fright.

Besides being an iconic DJ in Africa with a cabinet of awards to display, Coffee is a literary intellectual. He did his matric in Umtata Eastern Cape. After passing his matric, Coffee rolled at the Durban University of Technology for a degree in Jazz Music and graduated in 1999.

In 2019 Coffee hogged headlines after sharing that he wanted to go to Univesity to study interior design on his Instagram account. Since then, he never shared graduation pictures or certificates; maybe he is still studying, or he graduated secretly. It’s not clear if he pursued the degree or if he was joking with his fans.

A career in the entertainment industry

After graduating in 1999, Coffee worked for Madala Kunene as a backup singer. He worked for Madala for two years and later formed a music group SHANA(Simply Hot and Naturally African) with his two former university friends. Their group became famous, and they started having problems in the group on sharing profits which led to its downfall. Following the destruction of SHANA, Coffee began to work as a solo singer and his road to fame was bumpy, but he paved his way through.
