‘Despondent’ Jody February opens up on ugly Sundowns stint

Mamelodi Sundowns on loan goalkeeper Jody February has disclosed his honest feelings about the displeasing stint with the Tshwane giants.

The 26-year-old shot-stopper recently joined AmaZulu on loan from the Brazilians, having struggled to make the grade in the star-studded goalkeeping department at Chloorkop.

February, who signed for Sundowns in 2019 from Ajax Cape Town, has never featured for the club. This is his third loan spell since moving from the Urban Warriors, who are now called Cape Town Spurs.

He was first loaned out to Cape Umoya in the 2019/20 season and also spent the 2021/22 season with Swallows FC

In spite of all the aforementioned, February says he’s patient and optimistic about the future with the parent club.

“They obviously brought me there for a reason,” he told the journalists during the club’s media open day on Wednesday.

“It’s just probably taking longer than you guys wanted it to take. On my side, I’m patient, and I’m focusing on AmaZulu now.

“For now, I’m happy to be here, and I’m grateful to be here. Who knows, at the end of the season, I might stay here, or I might go back.

“So, I’m taking day by day, working towards something.”

When asked whether being unused at Downs gets him frustrated, he admitted that he gets ‘despondent’, but he feels that it’s pointless to be angry.

‘THEY KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING’

“No, it’s not going to help me if I get angry,” he added.

“At the end of the day, they know what they are doing. I think that question needs to be directed at them.

“It’s not up to me to be angry. Obviously, you’re despondent, but you as a professional, you need to dig deep and push.

“I’m lucky enough to get all these opportunities from the other clubs that are interested and want me to be on board. I want to repay them now.”

The former South Africa youth international was in goal when AmaZulu beat Tornado FC 3-2 in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 on Saturday at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

He was commended by his coach Romain Folz for having done well and putting in good competition in the club’s goalkeeping department.
