De Sa Breaks Silence On Egypt Return Talk

Roger da Sa has confirmed that talks are underway with the EFA over a potential return to the Egypt national team with Carlos Queiroz.

Queiroz, his assistant de Sa and most of the technical team were relieved of their duties after the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off failure when they lost to Senegal on penalties.

Despite showing competitiveness during their tenure, the near-misses of the FIFA Arab Cup, 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup seemingly led the EFA to venture into a new direction.

The pragmatic style of play under the experienced tactician was one of several factors behind the decision, but with Ehab Galal, the successor lasting only three games – Queiroz’s work has now appeared to be more appreciated as there’s a mutual understanding of where the national team is at the moment – while he detailed a vision for the Egyptian national team before his exit.

As reported last week by iDiski Times, de Sa has now come out to confirm the news in Egyptian media, speaking to ON Time Sports about the recent EFA contact.

“Negotiations [with the EFA] are already underway,” he confirmed. “He [Queiroz] told me he hasn’t made a decision yet and would not talk about it until next week.

“I don’t know what his decision will be, but we always talk to each other. Returning to coach Egypt is not an issue for him, but of course, the final decision is in his hands.”

He continued: “We were obviously frustrated by not qualifying for the World Cup because we really wanted to stay with the Egyptian national team for a longer period.

“He is a professional man who is very demanding in his work. We were asking for so many things on a daily basis in terms of information about all the players and because he wanted a stable structure for the team.

“With all these requests, there was support and positive reactions to everything he was asking for.”
