Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has urged Rowan Human to step up yet again in the time of need, as they fight to keep their status via the promotion and relegation play-offs.
Human has been in good form for Maritzburg of late, claiming the Man of the Match in the crucial 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in the last game of the 2022/23 league campaign.
The Bidvest Wits graduate stepped it up when they needed him more, scoring twice in the 2-0 win over Casric Stars in Maritzburg’s first match of the play-offs at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday.
Davids is demanding more of the same from him when they visit Cape Town Spurs at Athlone Stadium today (15:00)
“He’s one player that has so much more to offer,” said Davids of his number 10, who was signed at the beginning of last season by Ernst Middendorp.
“Constantly, daily working with him to try to improve his football, his spacing, his movements in behind, his movements to receive, some technical details to improve, but he has huge, huge potential.
“It is about now living out to that potential. We will work on the training pitch to help him to realize that there is more to give, there is more in the tank. We hope he continues in this way because has had some real good performances at the same time he’s on three yellows, we have to be careful.”
These were the first goals this season scored by Human, who did not score in 26 league matches for the Team of Choice.
Meanwhile, Spurs also started the play-offs well, beating Casric Stars 1-0 away from home last Sunday and both sides look set to tussle out for the mini league number one spot, as they both sit on three points.
There is good news for Maritzburg heading to the Spurs match as star striker, Amadou Soukouna, who was the club’s top scorer this season, is back from suspension.
The French international, who is rumored to be on his way to join AmaZulu, was suspended against Casric Stars, with Davids opting for Friday Samu to lead the line up top.
It will take some thinking for Davids to slot him in back in the side, the coach admitted.

“Amadou Soukouna comes back and he has to fight for his place,” Davids added.
“We won two zero, it is not so easy now to say do you change the line-up, do you continue, maybe we just go with the same line up. Let’s see and we will make the decision.”
