Danny K’s Wife Lisa Koppel Dies at 41 After Keeping Cancer Battle Private

Lisa Koppel spent almost three years fighting cancer away from the public eye, choosing to keep her illness private while focusing on her family.

The 41-year-old wife of South African musician Daniel “Danny K” Koppel was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2023. Her family confirmed her death on Monday, 10 August.

Danny K has since revealed details of his wife’s illness, saying she had faced the disease with “extraordinary strength and determination”.

The family pursued treatment in South Africa and abroad, searching for every available option as Lisa continued her battle.

According to Danny K, keeping the diagnosis private was a deliberate decision. Lisa wanted to protect their three children and preserve their happiness and innocence for as long as possible.

Her death has left both the Koppel and Gundelfinger families devastated.

Lisa was the daughter of prominent celebrity divorce lawyer Billy Gundelfinger, but had established her own career in law. She initially worked as a model before studying towards an LLB through Unisa.

She was admitted as an advocate of the High Court in 2010 and was working as an associate at Billy Gundelfinger Attorneys when she died.

Lisa and Danny K married in Somerset West, Western Cape, in 2012. They shared three children.

In a tribute following her death, Danny K described Lisa as the wife he “worshipped” and an extraordinary mother to their children.

He said her illness should not define her legacy.

“Lisa’s illness will never define her,” he said, describing her instead through the qualities he believed best represented her: kindness, humility, courage and devotion to those closest to her.

Danny K also revealed that Lisa had hoped her experience could help raise awareness about colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection.

The family has asked for prayers, compassion and privacy as they mourn her death.

For those closest to Lisa, her final years were marked not only by a devastating illness, but by a determined effort to protect the people she loved most.
