The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal says it is concerned that vultures may go on a spending frenzy using taxpayers’ money following the resignation of  Arts and Culture, Sports and Recreation MEC, Amanda Bani-Mapena, from the department.

Bani-Mapena, who was an MEC for only ten months, tendered her resignation earlier this week.

DA CONCERNED FOLLOWING BANI-MAPENA’S RESIGNATION

DA KZN spokesperson on Arts and Culture/Sport and Recreation, Bradley Singh said the MEC’s resignation comes while there are still individuals linked to corruption scandals who are still employed within this department.

Singh said Bani-Mapena shielded the department from failure and introduced some form of stability.

“The sudden resignation of Bani-Mapena will leave a vacuum at the department, and we are concerned that the vultures may take advantage of it to go on a feeding frenzy using taxpayers’ money. The sudden nature of her leaving raises alarms and as the DA we are, for the sake of transparency, committed to uncovering the reasons for this,” he said.

Singh, also called on Acting MEC, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi to step up and as it is critical that she does not simply play a caretaker role in terms of managing critical funding.

“This must include ensuring that the people of KZN, including our long-suffering artists, start seeing the money intended for them,” he said.

Bani-Mapena denied that her sudden resignation has to do with the R4 million three-day Multi-Genre Music Festival held at the Durban ICC.

KZN DSAC has since rubbished claims that the event was a waste of funds saying approximately R.4 million directly benefitted the artists.
