Cape Town City U18 and Cape Town Roses’ U19 teams will represent the Western Cape in the Engen Knockout Challenge Champ of Champs in Gauteng in October 2022.
After three days of the Engen Knockout Challenge in the Western Cape, more than 100 goals were scored at the tournament. Cape Town City, who are coached by coached by Byron Cottle and Mark Mayambela, started slowly but managed to collect seven points out of a possible nine in the round-robin.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ competition, tournament favourites, Cape Town Roses started like a house on fire scoring 25 goals in games including a 5-1 win against defending champions RV United.
When both sides made it to the knockout stages it was clear that they were starting to believe that they can go all the way, as City put four goals past FN Rangers to make it to the semi-finals, while Roses faced a difficult task in the semis as they were meeting last season’s finalists Spurs WFC.
The Citizens had to face Ubuntu in the semi-finals and the two-time champions were yet to taste a defeat in the tournament since 2019. But a solitary goal from Cape Town City proved to be the only difference in the game and City marched into their second consecutive final. Cape Town Roses cruised easily to the final after putting three goals past Spurs WFC.
Dangerous Heros had the task of stopping a dangerous Cape Town Roses partnership upfront of Lithemba Samsam and Jade Jones that had been terrorising defenders in the tournament, but the combination proved to be unstoppable when Roses won by 2-0.
So many lessons to be learned. A journey that is worth every tear shed. Empathy. Care. A role model, amongst many❤️ pic.twitter.com/qohnrfHOQ5
In the much-anticipated boys’ section final, City met fellow DStv Premiership club Stellenbosch, who had knocked out Cape Town Spurs in the other semi-final. The game, however, was wrapped in the first half as City went into the break 3-0 up and the final nail in the coffin was delivered by Tristan Brandt as City ran out 4-0 winners and were crowned champions.
