Côte d’Ivoire join South Africa and Morocco in the 32-team knockout stage after 2-0 victory over Curaçao

Nicolas Pépé inspired Côte d’Ivoire to their first-ever FIFA World Cup second-round appearance after scoring a brace in a 2-0 victory over Curaçao in their final Group E match at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, USA, on Thursday night.

The result saw the West African side join fellow African nation Morocco in the 32-team knockout stage of the competition.
Curaçao started the match brightly and threw everything at Côte d’Ivoire in search of an early goal, but they were unable to make their early pressure count.

The Elephants gradually found their rhythm and took the lead in the seventh minute through Pépé. The Villarreal winger received a well-timed pass from Yan Diomande before calmly slotting the ball home.

Côte d’Ivoire held on to their advantage until half-time, despite Curaçao continuing to show determination in their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance.

Curaçao came back stronger in the second half and nearly equalised in the 47th minute when Juriën Gaari connected with Juninho Bacuna’s cross, but his header was dealt with by the Côte d’Ivoire defence.
Sherel Floranus also came close five minutes later after receiving a pass from Bacuna, but his left-footed effort from outside the box sailed over the crossbar.
After surviving those scares, Côte d’Ivoire launched a counter-attack in the 57th minute. Franck Kessié collected a pass from Diomande and fired from the centre of the box, but his shot was blocked by Curaçao’s solid defense.

The Elephants eventually sealed the victory in the 83rd minute when Pépé completed his brace. Ibrahim Sangaré provided the assist as Pépé cut in from the right side of the box and struck a left-footed shot into the top-left corner.

The defeat confirmed Curaçao’s elimination from the tournament. The Caribbean nation conceded nine goals in their three group-stage matches.

For Côte d’Ivoire, the victory secured second place in Group E with four points, behind group leaders Germany, who played to a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in the other Group E match on the same day.
