Côte d’Ivoire became the second African nation to bow out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Norway in their Round of 32 clash at Dallas Stadium in Texas on Tuesday night.
The Elephants entered the knockout fixture carrying the hopes of the African continent after an impressive group-stage campaign, but they were punished for failing to convert the numerous chances they created, particularly during a dominant first-half display, with Odilon Kossounou Diamande and Nicolas Pépé the main culprits.
There was a period in the opening half when Côte d’Ivoire looked the more dangerous side, stretching the Norwegiandefensee with quick attacks down both flanks and forcing the Scandinavians to chase their own shadows. Their aggressive approach earned them several corner kicks, but they repeatedly failed to make the opportunities count.
The Ivorians came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions. One effort flashed just wide of the post after a well-worked move inside the penalty area, while another powerful header from a corner was brilliantly saved by the Norwegian goalkeeper. A dangerous cross also evaded everyone inside the six-yard box with the goal at the mercy of the attackers.
Norway absorbed the early pressure and gradually settled into the match before capitalising on a defensive lapse to take the lead through Antonio Nusa, who opened the scoring in the 39th minute. The goal gave Norway a 1-0 advantage at the break.
Norway continued to dictate proceedings in the second half, and it appeared they would hold on to their slender lead until the final whistle.
However, Côte d’Ivoire had other ideas as they responded with determination, drawing level through Amad Diallo in the 74th minute to reignite their hopes of reaching the Round of 16.
Despite the equaliser, the Elephants were once again let down by poor finishing. A glorious one-on-one opportunity was squandered, while another promising attack ended with a shot sailing over the crossbar.
Norway made Côte d’Ivoire pay for those missed opportunities when Erling Haaland struck the decisive goal in the 86th minute after being set up by Patrick Berg, sealing a 2-1 victory and booking Norway’s place in the Round of 16, where they will face Brazil.
For Côte d’Ivoire, the defeat marked a painful end to what had been a promising World Cup campaign. They showed quality, resilience and attacking flair throughout the tournament but ultimately paid the price for their inability to convert chances when it mattered most.
The result also reduced Africa’s representation in the tournament, with Côte d’Ivoire joining South Africa among the continent’s teams eliminated in the Round of 32. Bafana Bafana exited after a narrow 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada, while the Elephants fell 2-1 to a clinical Norway side.
Despite the disappointment, Côte d’Ivoire leave the tournament with plenty of positives to build on after demonstrating they can compete with some of the world’s strongest nations.
Their performance against Norway showed courage and attacking intent, but in knockout football, missed chances often prove costly
