Former Stellenbosch FC striker Fuad Johnson has joined Motsepe Foundation Championship side La Masia after Kaizer Chiefs opted against signing him.

Johnson, 19, was surprisingly released by the DStv Diski Challenge champions after his goals played a pivotal role in their title triumph last season.

He had trials in Belgium with Anwerp and Westerlo but both clubs opted against bringing him to Europe, before training with Amakhosi’s reserves.

He previously worked with Chiefs’ Diski Challenge side coach Vela Khumalo at the South Africa U17 level but the Glamour Boys opted against signing the free agent.

Johnson has now found a new club, joining newly promoted Motsepe Foundation Championship side La Masia, signing a two-year deal, as reported by Joshua Hendricks.

“We already identified which players we wanted and he was one of them,” La Masia co-coach Ashraf Hendricks told his namesake.

“We unfortunately had to wait as Chiefs was busy negotiating a deal with him. We were hoping we could get him on a loan deal from them.

“That deal didn’t materialize. We then had a chat to him and we managed to get him out right. He has a good physique, holds the ball up well, good movement into the right areas and has the right attitude to become a very good player.

“Most importantly he loves scoring goals.”
