Mamelodi Sundowns have signed Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil, who joins the club from Botola Pro outfit SCC Mohammedia for a fee of R6.8 million.

The 24-year-old defender is widely considered as one of the most technically gifted defenders in the Moroccan top-flight but endured a fallout with former Raja Athletic Club head coach Rachid Taoussi which saw him sidelined for the second half of the campaign during his season-long loan.

As first reported by iDiski Times on 24 June, Downs reignited their interest in Boutouil for the new season after already trying to sign him in 2020 and both club’s agreed to terms last week.

His Moroccan club Mohammedia confirmed the deal on their social channels and this publication has been informed that Boutouil has put pen to paper on a three-year deal, which includes an option to extend it by another two.

“At 3 am this morning we finished the deal. It’s a 3-year-deal with a two-year option, the fee is $400 000,” the player’s agent told iDiski Times.

Sundowns will transfer $400 000 (R6.8 million) to Mohammedia and are expected to announce their new arrival soon.

Boutouil becomes the first Botola Pro league player to join a club in South Africa, despite late interest from Raja Casablanca to hijack the move.
