Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has been found guilty of ‘bringing the league into disrepute’ Premier Soccer League (PSL) prosecutor Zola Majavu has confirmed.
In one of the long protracted drama’s in the 2021/22 season Comitis was charged by the PSL over his reaction to advocate Nassir Cassim’s ruling in favour to have the Kaizer Chiefs fixtures they failed to honour in December be replayed.
Speaking on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Comitis labelled the decision a ‘dark day in South African football’ and was quite vocal of the alleged double standards when it comes to the Soweto giants while stating the Covid-19 regulations were signed by all the members of the PSL, suggesting that those set rules should be final.
After the hearing took place on Thursday 19, May, Majavu has now provided an update on the case:
“I can confirm that Mr John Comitis of Cape Town City appeared before the PSL DC today to answer to charges of bringing the league into disrepute,” Majavu said.
“This is as a result of the media utterances that he made on various platforms, pertaining to the then outcome of the Kaizer Chiefs outcome before the arbitrator.
“He pleaded guilty and was subsequently sanctioned such. Having listened to the submissions both of the league through myself as the prosecutor and his league representative, the DC ruled as follows:
“1) That he is fined a monetary amount of R80 000, which amount is wholly suspended for a period of 12 months on condition that he’s not found guilty of the same offence again.
“2) He was further directed to send a written apology to the executive committee of the league as well as to Kaizer Chiefs football club.
“3) He was also ordered to pay the costs of the two sittings, which cost would be administratively computed by the league and on forwarded to him for immediate payment. These costs could be in the region of just over R100 000.”
Majavu also confirmed that there are no other matters currently that could have an affect on the conclusion of the league.
City will be looking to secure second place and a CAF Champions League qualification on the final day of the season this weekend when they travel to Danie Craven for a Cape Derby against Stellenbosch FC – who could finish in the top-three if other results go their way.
