Chiefs target Fiston Mayele leads Tanzania Golden Boot chase

One-time Kaizer Chiefs target Fiston Mayele continues to dominate Tanzania’s NBC Premier League Golden Boot Award chase with 13 goals.

Yanga‘s Congolese forward Mayele is three goals ahead of Zambian Moses Phiri of Simba.

Mayele increased his tally on Tuesday when he scored twice for Tanzania champions, Young Africans (Yanga).

FISTON MAYELE WAS LINKED WITH CHIEFS

Mayele was a subject of transfer speculation to Chiefs in the pre-season, but Yanga dismissed such reports saying he was still contracted to the club.

Yanga eased to a 3-0 win over Coastal United in Dar es Salaam to go seven points clear of second-placed Simba.

Across Tanzania borders, Nigerian Babatunde Adepoju has won Malawi’s TNM Super League Golden Boot Award with 18 goals.

The striker Babatunde Adepoju earned his first Golden Boot Award with champions Nyasa Big Bullets since relocating to Malawi some seven years ago.

The Nigerian’s scoring spree also helped Bullets retain the league title for the fourth consecutive time and 16th overall.

IN OTHER LEAGUES

Babatunde Adepoju finished three goals ahead of former Polokwane City striker Muhammad Sulumba of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

Ex-TS Sporting forward Chawanangwa Kaonga settled for third place with 13 goals for Silver Strikers.

Across Malawi’s borders, Mozambique Golden Boot Award winner Lau King finished with just nine goals for US Songo.

King has since told the Mozambique Football Federation website that he was not overly happy to score just nine league goals.

“I’m sad that I didn’t reach the individual goal of scoring 15 goals. Maybe next year,” he is quoted saying.

He said he would try again next season to realise that dream of hitting double-digit of goals.

“The individual interest can never surpass the collective one, so the conquest of Moçambola was the main objective, and this was achieved, and I am happy for that,” he said.

UD Songo won the league title after they edged the holders Black Bulls, by a point.

Mozambique’s neighbours South Africa’s DStv Premiership also offer an interesting top scorers’ race.

The Golden Boot Award race in the DStv Premiership involves Peter Shalulile (Mamelodi Sundowns), SuperSport United’s Bradley Grobler and Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana (Chiefs).

The trio has six goals apiece going into the league restart at the end of this month.

AmaZulu’s Gabadinho Mhango and Sundowns’ Abubeker Nasi are also Golden Boot favourites.
