Cardoso On Chiefs – Youngsters Won’t Win You Trophies

Sekhukhune United vice-captain Daniel Cardoso has cast doubt over Kaizer Chiefs being capable of winning silverware this season.

Ahead of facing Amakhosi in the league this weekend, Sekhukhune won the first round 1-0 at FNB Stadium and both side’s remain in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

Babina Noko will face off against Stellenbosch at Danie Craven, while Chiefs host Orlando Pirates in a Soweto Derby at the Calabash.

With the likes of Samkelo Zwane, Mduduzi Shabalala, Ashley du Preez and Christian Saile forming part of the new-look Chiefs starting line-up in recent weeks, Cardoso, who spent seven seasons at Naturena before joining Sekhukhune was quite straightforward when asked if they’ve built a team that could end the eight-season trophy drought this season.

“I don’t want to open up a can of worms but youngsters are not going to win you titles or trophies,” Cardoso said when asked about beating Chiefs in the first round of the league.

“They are in a rebuilding phase as you can see, Zwane, Shabalala, [Happy] Mashiane, [Siyabonga] Ngezana, they got rid of all the experienced players. If you look at Sundowns’ team, they have experienced players which is why the win trophies season in, season out.

“I think he’s got a good foundation going there, but to win titles and trophies, you need far more experience, especially on the field. I mean they have quite a few experienced players sitting in the stands and at home and it’s been missed for them.”

The two sides will face off at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon (15h00).
