Calculators Out? What Bafana Need To Qualify For AFCON

Morocco have now qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after the 2-2 draw between Bafana Bafana and Liberia – the calculators are now out for second place.

The 2023 AFCON which will take place in Ivory Coast in January and the Atlas Lions are the first team to book themselves a place in the tournament with the hosts.

Walid Regragui’s men only played two games, with the 2-1 over Bafana and the 2-0 win over Lone Stars, both played in their home country.

With Zimbabwe disqualified for the qualification due to the ZIFA ban imposed by FIFA – it meant second place would become an outright battle between South Africa and Liberia.

It appeared to be going one way for an hour at Orlando Stadium with Bafana leading and appearing to be dominating the fixture, but the visitors managed to fight back for a point which leads us to the dreaded calculator, synonymous with Bafana in campaigns gone by.

  • Should Bafana win in Monrovia, they would be through to AFCON with four points and beating their opposition via the head-to-head ruling. Even if Bafana loses to Morocco at home and Liberia beat the Atlas Lions – it would not be enough for Ansu Keita’s side.
  • If Liberia win, they would qualify for AFCON
  • If it’s a draw, 0-0, or 1-1, Bafana would need to get more points against Morocco than Libera in the last game of Group K
  • If it’s 3-3 or higher, Liberia would need more points in their last game against Morocco – and currently, they are ahead of South Africa on h2h away goals scored
  • Should the match end 2-2, then the overall goal difference would take into effect over h2h rules

Keita’s side welcome Hugo Broos’ troops to the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon at 18h00.
