Bucs Have Earned More MTN8 Prize Money Than Downs & Chiefs Combined

Orlando Pirates have now earned more prize money from the MTN8 competition than Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns combined.

The Buccaneers added another R8 million cheque to their kitty after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 on penalties in Saturday’s MTN8 final to defend their title.

The Sea Robbers lifted their fifth MTN8 title – since the telecommunications took over the sponsoring in 2008.

It meant another R8 million for the Soweto giants, extending their overall prize money income to R48 million. They have taken part in 15 out of the 16 editions since MTN8 took over, winning five, which has earned them R40 million, plus another R8 million from the 10 other editions.

Supersport United follow in second place with R27.2 million in prize money, while Kaizer Chiefs sit in third with R26.4 million and Sundowns in fourth with R18.4 million – all adding , R800 000 from this season.

The now defunct Bidvest Wits sit in fifth with R14.4 million, just ahead of Cape Town City with R13.6 million.
