Broos – Kill Me If Don’t Go Through AFCON Group Stages

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has made another bold claim after qualifying his South African team for the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

Broos, 70, helped Bafana return to the AFCON after they missed out on the tournament in 2021.

After that failure to qualify Broos’ predecessor Molefi Ntseki was sacked and replaced by the Belgian, who famous stated in his first press conference that he shouldn’t be judged on the 2023 FIFA World Cup qualification but insisted “kill me if we do not qualify for 2023 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup”.

He achieved the first part of his promise and he made another bold statement pitch side after Bafana beat Liberia in Monrovia on Tuesday evening when reminded of his initial statement.

“That’s what I meant at that moment. This is a country that normally should be every time on Afcon. And I didn’t understand why it didn’t go the last years,” he told Bafana’s media officer Romy Titus.

“So this was very important. We have a new team, we have a young team, and international games are very important to have the international experience. And also going to the biggest tournament of Africa.

“So we did it now, we can only progress in the next months with opponents that can learn on something and be ready for Afcon.

“I will say what I said in the beginning, they may kill me if we don’t go to Afcon. I think you may kill me now, if we don’t go through the [group] stages in Afcon next year.”
