The Madlanga Commission Has Paused Its Public Hearings Until 9 November 2026.
From the week of 5 October, the #MadlangaCommission will sit in camera to hear evidence that cannot be aired because of ongoing investigations or confidential material. It will not sit on Friday, 2 October.
The commission will also hold a two-day seminar in October to prepare its final report.
It says livestreaming and media coverage will be difficult in the run-up to the 4 November local government elections and immediately afterwards.
Phase Two will include the evidence of suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu before Phase Three, when KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is due to return.
The commission’s final report remains due on 25 January 2027. The deadline was extended by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 19 September.
Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who has already testified before the commission, is due to return on 14 December 2026. A further subpoena was served on him on 25 September, which Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga described as unacceptably late.
The commission also heard that Matlala does not have a legal team available for an immediate appearance and that his return could be brought forward depending on his criminal trial.
