INTERPOL ARRESTS TWO TURKISH FUGITIVES WANTED FOR GBV OFFENCES
INTERPOL South Africa has arrested two Turkish fugitives wanted in Türkiye for separate gender-based violence offences.
The latest arrest was a 40-year-old man in Isipingo, south of Durban, on Thursday, 1 October. He is wanted in Türkiye on charges including r*pe, s*xual assault, kidnapping, assault and malicious damage to property.
Police allege he kidnapped his then-fiancée in 2010 and r*ped and assaulted her over several days, leaving her with permanent physical and psychological injuries. He appeared in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 2 October, where the Turkish government is seeking his extradition.
The arrest follows the capture of another Turkish fugitive, a former primary school principal, in Cape Town on 21 September. He is wanted on allegations of s*xual assault, kidnapping and intimidation involving a nine-year-old victim.
Both men have appeared in South African courts as extradition proceedings get underway. Their names have not been released, and the allegations have not been tested in court.
