Bobby Discusses His ‘Backseat’ Role

Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has insisted he’s still involved in every operational decision at Kaizer Chiefs, despite taking a “backseat” role since Kaizer Motaung Jr. was appointed as the Sporting Director.

Kaizer Jr. was named the club’s Sporting Director on 1 July 2021 and has since been working in the role, which resulted in him being somewhat of the “face” of Amakhosi.

His older brother Bobby Motaung agreed with this notion, but insisted he is still part of the decision-makers at the club, despite stepping a bit more into background and making less public appearances.

“I’m still involved. The only thing is obviously my brother is the Sporting Director, so he is more in the front in terms of [being] the face,” he told TimesLIVE.

“But I’m part of the team, I’m part of the business, I’m part of the Kaizer Chiefs family.

“Only that, you know, someone must take the backseat, we can’t all be in the forefront and trying to show face.

“But I’m there, I’m there full-time, I’m part of the decisions. Any decision that has been taken, any operational issues, we are together. We work it together as a unit.”

In the same chat Bobby Motaung, also confirmed that the club’s leadership will review what he called a “disappointing season”, albeit a “season of rebuilding”, to see where they need to beef up in the technical team and the squad.

Chiefs lost their 11th league game on Saturday – a new negative record in the PSL era since 1996 – and fans expressed their unhappiness after the 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United, hurling objects at players and coach Arthur Zwane.

The latter was hit by an object in the face, as per MTNFC, which led to him missing the post-match press conference, where he was replaced by assistant Dillon Sheppard.
