Benni Defends Hotto & Lorch

Former Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy has sent a message to his former club and defended Thembinkosi Lorch and Deon Hotto after their misses cost the Buccaneers a chance at lifting the CAF Confederations Cup trophy.

The 44-year-old, who parted ways with AmaZulu earlier in the season, is currently a free agent and seemingly watched the match against RS Berkane.

However, the Moroccan giants beat the Sea Robbers 5-4 on penalties after both sides scored one goal in extra-time. While Lorch missed the only penalty in the shootout, Hotto had wasted several chances in the first 90 minutes of the game, but McCarthy losing and missing chances are part of the game.

“Unlucky Ma’buccaneer, such is life. You win some, you loose some,” McCarthy said on social media.

“You must remain proud of the team for their effort. They will come good, no doubt. Once and Always.”

When others engaged him about Hotto and Lorch, McCarthy found fond words for the two Pirates forwards.

“This football is a cruel game. I’m sure the players gave it their all, we can’t point fingers,” he said when asked about Hotto.

“Next season is around the corner and they must make it right.”

And on Lorch he said: “Maybe Lorch felt confident after the goal and put his hand up to take the spot kick. No harm in a confident player willing to step up, just my opinion.”
