Baxter Hails Petersen After Derby Performance

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has hailed the performance of goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for his heroics in the Soweto Derby.

Amakhosi completed the league double over their bitter rivals, beating them 2-1 on Saturday and moving three points clear of the Buccaneers on the log despite having played three games less.

The shot stopper came up with a superb display, preventing Pirates several times from scoring, including in the final minutes when he secured the three points.

“Petersen was outstanding, he’s been outstanding since he came into the team,” Baxter said.

“The one save right at the death there gave us the win didn’t it? It’s a one on one, they’re clean through, and he makes a save. It’s a game-changing save.

“That’s what he’s there for, that’s what he trains to do. He deserves a massive pat on the back.

“He’s really thrown his hat in the ring and says I want to stay around.”

Petersen spent the first half of the season on the bench, when Daniel Akpeyi was picked by Baxter but has now in Chiefs last four matches and has seemingly made the goalkeeping position his own.

Chiefs only return to action on 19 March when they will face Golden Arrows in their next DStv Premiership game.
