Bafana Bafana striker Fagrie Lakay has helped Pyramids FC to qualify for their first ever CAF Champions League.

Lakay, 26, joint Pyramids from Cape Town City in January 2022 and is playing an impressive 2022/23 campaign abroad, having netted 10 goals across all competitions for his side.

Earlier in the week, he netted a brace as Pyramids came back from a 2-0 disadvantage to beat Smouha 5-2.

The win saw Pyramids write history, as they opened a 10-point gap to third-placed future with just three games to spare.

It means Pyramids, who were founded as Al Assiouty Sport in2008 and renamed to Pyramids in 2018, have qualified for Africa’s elite club competition for the first time ever.

They featured in the CAF Confederations Cup this past season, but were knocked out in the quarter-final by Marumo Gallants.

Pyramids should’ve already achieved this milestone last season, when they finished in second place behind champions Zamalek, but the Egyptian Football Association submitted their participants in the CAF inter-club competitions based on the halfway standings, when Al Ahly were ahead of Pyramids.

They will now played in the CAFCL in 2023/24 alongside Al Ahly, who are destined to win their first Premier League title since 2019/20.

The team of Lakay’s Bafana teammate Percy Tau are sitting one point ahead of Pyramids on the log but have played five games less. They are still unbeaten and have won 21 of their 26 matches so far.

Lakay, meanwhile, is sitting in joint-fifth place in the race for the Golden Boot. Mabululu of El Ittihad is leading the race with 14 goals.
