Golden Arrows have strengthened their goalkeeping department yet again with the signing of Nigerian goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode, while they also parted ways with two players.
According to iDiski Times sources, the towering goalkeeper has signed a two-year deal with an option to renew.
Kayode, 30, was signed from Sunshine Stars and has previously played for Enyimba, Lobi Stars and Akwa United in his homeland where he’s kept 29 clean sheets in 94 games in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
He joins the Durban-based side, having participated in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup before.
He will be the fourth goalkeeper at Arrows, with the club having signed Ismail Watenga from Mamelodi Sundowns on loan, while they still have Sifiso Mlungwana and Nkosi Gumede on their books, which will create a healthy competition in goals.
Kayode becomes the ninth player captured by Abafana Bes’Thende this window after their books have been boosted by the 10Bet sponsorship, following the signings of Brandon Theron, Bradley Cross, Lungelo Nguse, Nhlanhla Zwane, Angelo Van Rooi, Olwethu Mncube, Tebogo Motloung and promoted Siyanda Mthanti from their development.
He was in goals when Lobi Stars beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the Champions League group stage match in 2018/19 season in Enugu. When it came to the return leg in Pretoria, Pitso Mosimane’s men ran out 3-0 victors to finish second in Group A behind Wydad Casablanca, while Lobi Stars finished third.
Kayode was also in goals when Enyimba lost 2-1 to Orlando Pirates in the Confed Cup group-stage game at Orlando Stadium in the 2020/21 season, but that did not stop the Nigerian side finish top of Group A ahead of the Soweto giants.
Meanwhile, this publication has been informed that Arrows have parted ways with midfield duo Siyabonga Khumalo and Nduduzo Mhlongo.
The former’s departure comes as a huge surprise as whenever co-coaches Vusi Vilakazi and Mabhuti Khenyeza selected him from the bench last season he injected some life into the side.
Arrows, who have four points from three matches, were hammered 4-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns midweek last week.
The Durban-based side, who are ninth in the DStv Premiership table, next host Polokwane City at Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday (15:00).
