Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star Derrick Spencer has weighed in on the quality gap between the two Soweto giants and Masandawana.

Spencer was commenting on the signings made by Pirates and Chiefs in the recently closed September transfer window.

The Buccaneers made blockbuster deals in moves for Patrick Maswanganyi, Katlego Otladisa, Lesedi Kapinga, Karim Kimvuidi, Siphelo Baloni, Melusi Buthelezi, and Siphamandla Gumede, who is on loan at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Orbit College.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi acquired the services of players such as Mduduzi Mdantsane, Pule Mmodi, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Tebogo Potsane, Given Msimango, Efmamjjasond González, Ranga Chivaviro, Edson Castillo and Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

Spencer is well aware that one primary reason that has been affecting Pirates and Chiefs’ ability to go toe-to-toe with Bafana Ba Style has been the depth of the quality gap between the three clubs.

However, he believes that the Sea Robbers and the Glamour Boys are slowly closing the gap with the good signings they have made.

“I think all the teams. Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs as well, they are slowly closing the gap,” Spencer told FARPost

“Pirates make good signings every season. Even Chiefs have made some good signings.”

‘ORLANDO PIRATES GOT NOTHING TO LOSE’

The 41-year-old retired footballer noted that Pirates are going into the MTN8 final game as wounded tigers. Pirates were recently boated out of the CAF Champions League.

“This is a cup game and they have lost three games coming into this game. Also, knocked out of the Champions League,” he added.

“They are wounded tigers and they would want to come back with the title. I think Pirates has got nothing to lose. They will go out there and try to win the game. It’s going to be an interesting game and looking forward to it.”

The much-awaited final clash will take place tonight [18:00] at Mabhida Stadium.
