AmaZulu have set their sight on signing Maritzburg United striker Amadou Soukouna, iDiski Times has learnt.
Maritzburg confirmed the signing of Soukona on a two-year deal in August 2021 and his contract will expire next month, although it is not clear whether the club have an option to extend it.
Soukouna is Maritzburg’s top scorer this season, having netted eight times in 25 matches for the Team of Choice.
The latest goal by the Frenchman was the crucial 1-0 winner against Stellenbosch FC in the penultimate game last Saturday, where he brilliantly lost his markers inside the box before calmly slotting home.
That goal went a long way for Maritzburg in giving them a reprieve of relegation, as Chippa United were crushed 4-0 by TS Galaxy.
Soukouna also was a handful when Maritzburg drew 1-1 in the controversial match against Mamelodi Sundowns in the both clubs’ last game of the season at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday.
He brought a brilliant save from Denis Onyango and also had another one-vs-one chance but Mosa Lebusa was able to clear the ball before it crossed the line after he had rounded off the Ugandan veteran, all in the first half.
This publication has learnt that Soukouna is chased by Usuthu, where he will likely be a replacement of Lehlohonolo Majoro, who is understood to be leaving AmaZulu at the end of this term.
The former Toulouse graduate, who joined Maritzburg from Hapoel Kfar Saba in Israel, has featured in 48 matches for the club and has scored 11 goals in the process.
One of those goals came against AmaZulu last season in 1-1 draw on 28 November 2021.
Usuthu have already signed Marumo Gallants star midfielder Celimpilo Ngema on a pre-contract and as reported by the iDiski Times a few months ago.
