Al Ahly have suffered a major blow in the Egyptian Premier League after losing to Fagrie Lakay’s Pyramids.
The record champions were still on track to draw level on points with rivals Zamalek, having two games in hand but suffered a costly defeat on Saturday.
Pyramids, who themselves sit in second place, three points behind Zamalek, beat Al Ahly thanks to goals by Ben Youssef and Eric Traore.
Lakay started for Pyramids but got substitute for Traore in minute 63. The defeat was new coach Ricardo Soares’ first loss as Al Ahly coach.
The ‘Club of the Century’ remained on 48 points from 23 games, while Zamalek have 57 from 25 matches and Pyramids have 54 in 25 games.
Even, if Al Ahly win their two games in hand, they would still remain three points behind Zamalek and need to hope for the defending champions to slip up.
Al Ahly have now dropped points in three out of seven league (two draws and one defeat) games since Pitso Mosimane left the club.
