Akpeyi Closing In On Next Move After Chiefs Exit

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and Nigeria international Daniel Akpeyi is closing in on his next move ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Akpeyi, 35, was part of the major clearout at Chiefs this month as they looked to rebuild the squad and lower the average age which ended his three-year stint at the Soweto giants.

Having first arrived in the Premier Soccer League with Chippa United back in 2015 from Nigerian Professional Football League outfit Warri Wolves Akpeyi has proven himself a reliable performer and went on to remain a regular in the Nigeria senior national team.

While talks broke down with Sekhuhkune United after failing to agree terms, the likes of Orlando Pirates, who parted ways with Wayne Sandilands recently have been linked with a move for the experienced keeper, who can be registered as a local due to being more than five years in the country, but his agent Mohamed Lawal says they’re in no rush to find his next club.

“Daniel can play as a local but still we’re in talks with some clubs [but] nothing has been finalised yet, we’ve been in talks for some time, so we’ll see [what happens next],” Lawal tells iDiski Times.

“In the next week, we have to know if we’re staying in the PSL or moving somewhere else. At this point of the season, you will see and read and hear a lot of speculations about players moving.

“All I can say is Daniel is a quality goalkeeper, any team, not only in the PSL would love to have a player of his quality and experience.

“Anyone who aspires to win things would want to have a player of his qualities because he brings so much for younger keepers to learn from him, he has the experience to share – I’m sure we will be able to tie up a team here in South Africa.”

The 19-time capped Super Eagles keeper featured 173 times for Chippa and Chiefs respectively, conceding 166 goals and keeping 63 clean sheets.
