Ahly Legend Says Pitso Must Be Sacked

Al Ahly legend Wael Gomaa says he hopes the club sacks head coach Pitso Mosimane after he secures them a third consecutive CAF Champions League title.

Gomaa who is widely considered as one of Egypt and Ahly’s greatest ever defenders has become quite a critic of Mosimane of late despite initially heaping him with praise upon his arrival.

He was part of the technical staff of the Egypt national team under Carlos Quieroz that lost in the Arab Cup semi-final, AFCON final and 2022 FIFA World Qualifying play-offs over the past year.

But in a scathing assessment of the three-time CAF Champions League-winning manager, he suggests they relieve him of his duties as he feels Mosimane has not improved the Red Devils.

“I’d like to congratulate Al Ahly for qualifying, they earned it at the first leg, but tonight, the performance was not convincing,” Gomaa said on BeIn Sport (h/t) KingFut. “Mosimane’s management of the game was poor. Al Ahly should have attacked more, they have higher quality players than Raja.

“Pitso just thought about qualifying, but Al Ahly could have played better football. Mosimane took a massive risk and it could have backfired, he’s lucky to coach Al Ahly.

“Hussain El-Shahat was the best player on the pitch and he took him out. Al Ahly could have conceded more goals tonight, we were lucky. I also didn’t see a single Al Ahly player improve during Mosimane’s time with the club.”

Mosimane was recently rewarded with a new improved contract by the Club of the Century after securing back-to-back Club World Cup medals, something never achieved in the club’s history but the 45-year-old says they ‘look like a small club’ in the way they approach fixtures.

“I don’t wish defeat for Al Ahy so that Mosimane leaves, but Al Ahly can win with better performance for sure,” he continued. “Once this Champions League campaign is over, Al Ahly can look for another manager. I am sure the team can improve with another coach.

“The club board is happy with Pitso because he’s winning, but we are not happy because he makes Al Ahly look like a small club.”
