Police in the Eastern Cape have opened an inquest docket following the discovery of the body of one of its members.
The 36-year-old police sergeant, stationed at the Cambridge Police Station, was found lying on the rocks at West Bank Beach in East London on the afternoon of June 1, 2024.

According to Provincial Police Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, Sergeant Sinethemba Msutu was involved in an accident with his private vehicle on May 30, 2024.
He was taken to a private hospital for treatment. Later that night, a colleague picked him up and took him to his police barracks at SAPS Cambridge.

On May 31, 2024, at approximately 9:30 AM, a fire was reported in Sergeant Msutu’s room. Fortunately, he was not present at the time.
However, a missing persons report was filed the same day after his absence was noted. The situation took a grim turn on June 1, 2024, when a fisherman spotted his body between the rocks at West Bank Beach.
An inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the sergeant’s death. The results of the post-mortem report are pending, which will hopefully provide more clarity on this unfortunate incident.
