Cape Town City have the bragging rights and added to Cape Town Spurs’ woes as they won 3-1 at the DHL Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was a perfect day in Cape Town as the sun burst through after a rainy Friday, as the relayed pitch at DHL Stadium finally saw its first game.

It was Spurs who stunned City early on when Chumani Butsaka set up Ashley Cupido in just the third minute of the game, and Spurs’ top goalscorer from last season had the beating of Darren Keet to make it 1-0.

It was City who were dominating possession and much of the first 45 minutes was played in the Spurs’ half. But Eric Tinkler’s team weren’t making in roads in the final third.

However, in the 41st minute, City were awarded a penalty after Rushwin Dortley was adjudged to have handled the ball while trying to clear off the line.

Darwin Gonzalez stepped up and his shot had enough power to beat Sam Ramsbottom.

1-1 at halftime, Cupido had another chance early in the second half, but this time his attempt brushed the crossbar and went over.

But it was City who continued to create pressure, Thabiso Kutumela and Khanyisa Mayo both having chances in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half that failed to trouble Ramsbottom. And there were other chances, as crosses swung into the box failed to find teammates.

But finally City were in front, Darwin Gonzalez delivering in a low cross in the 69th minute, and Mayo got the important touch to make it 2-1.

It could have been another to Mayo in the 76th minute but his goal-bound shot was cleared off the line by Dortley.

But it was 3-1 ten minutes later, as the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line, and was ruled as an own goal by Siyanda Msani

City walked away with the bragging rights, while Spurs fell to the seventh defeat in seven games.
