Mmodi and Castillo fire Chiefs to first league win of the season

Kaizer Chiefs registered their first league victory in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season after defeating AmaZulu FC 3-0 on Saturday at FNB Stadium.

Mmodi Pule was the star on the night as he netted a brace, while Edson Castillo was also on the scoresheet.

This was Chiefs’ first victory of the season under the guidance of coach Molefi Ntseki.

The former Bafana Bafana coach had earned a draw and two defeats in the league. Ntseki’s first win in SA’s top flight and as a Chiefs coach came in the MTN8 quarter-finals against Cape Town City FC.

The hosts were on the front foot from the get-go. New signing Pule Mmodi opened the scoring as early as four minutes. This was his first goal for the club since joining from Golden Arrows.

10 minutes into the match, Mduduzi Mdantsane came close to doubling the lead, but his effort was off target. Moments later, Mmodi almost made it 2-0, but he also missed the target.

AmaZulu’s first real chance at goal came in the 34th minute to Wayde Jooste, but he couldn’t find the target.

The scoreline remained unchanged for the remainder of the first half, with Chiefs the happier side.

Despite Amakhosi scoring first and taking the lead in the first half, Usuthu were a better side in terms of ball possession. Going into the break, the visitors had 59 per cent compared to 41 of the visitors.

PULE MMODI COMPLETE HIS BRACE

Just before the hour mark, Mmodi made it 2-0 to hand the Glamour Boys a two-goal cushion.

Three minutes till full time, Edson Castillo made it 3-0 to ensure that the three points are at Naturena.

The victory saw Ntseki record his first win in the SA topflight league. Mmodi was named the Man of the Match for scoring the brace.

For the KZN side, it’s back to the drawing board. AmaZulu remain winless after four matches. They have three draws and suffered one defeat.
