De Sa – We Don’t Want To Repeat Bafana’s Failure

Former Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits coach Roger De Sa says he and Carlos Queiroz don’t want to repeat the same failure as Bafana Bafana did after hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The two have been on an adventure ride in the last two years going to Egypt, then Iran for the 2022 World Cup before securing a contract with Qatar until 2026.

De Sa spoke to iDiski Times editor Rob Delport in edition 116 of the newspaper where he discussed the booming football culture in the United Arab Emirates, the interest and investment in the game.

De Sa hopes that he and his partner won’t let what happened to South Africa, hosting the World Cup and not qualifying for the following event, happen to Qatar.

“Look, originally it was a 2026 project. My contract is three-and- a-half years long. It’s supposed to be up until the World Cup 2026, which hopefully we will qualify for and participate in,” De Sa told iDiski Times.

“You know, the only other country to host the World Cup and not qualify for the following World Cup, is South Africa. We are really, really hoping that we don’t allow Qatar to do that, we try to make Qatar qualify for the next one.

“I think having more teams participating, hopefully it will help us. We are waiting for the draw, and we’ll soon know who’s in our group. Asia is a tough continent like they all are. So hopefully, we can pull them through and make sure they qualify for the USA, Mexico and Canada in 2026.”
