A white South African woman who moved to the United States (US) now has no choice but to return to her native country after she lost her bid to avoid deportation. News24 reports that Chantelle Robbertse and her mother Gloudina were convicted for defrauding the California Government by filing false disability claims using people’s identities without their knowledge.

While Gloudina was sentenced to four-and-a-half years behind bars, Chantelle (28) was handed a two-year sentence. The Board of Immigration Appeals then sought to have Chantelle deported back to South Africa, but she challenged the move with the US Court of Appeals.

In her bid to avoid being sent back to South Africa, Robbertse told the court that she would be “persecuted or tortured in South Africa because she is white.” She further claimed her father had been a high-ranking member of military intelligence during the apartheid era and thus some would be motivated to after her family.

The US court didn’t buy her argument and subsequently ordered that she be deported. Both mother and daughter are accused of defrauding the state of California to the tune of $475,350 (approximately R9 million). Well, it’s not just load shedding Robbertse has to worry about, she is also liable for half of that money.

It was learnt that after their false disability claims were approved, a debit card was issued in the name of the indivuals being impersonated. The two used commercial mailboxes set up in California and Idaho to receive the debit cards.

“When someone’s identity is stolen it can take several years to correct the issue. Often times this leaves victims without the ability to obtain funds they desperately need, from programs meant to assist them, all while struggling to prove their own financial responsibility. Ultimately, victims and taxpayers bare the largest burden when crimes like this occur,” said Brad Bench, an officer in charges of the case.
