ON THIS DAY: 27 AUGUST
1985 | Major General Muhammadu Buhari, the head of the Supreme Military Council of Nigeria, was deposed in a coup d’état organised by Major General Ibrahim Babangida.
1990 | Gerrit Viljoen, Minister of Constitutional Development, stated that negotiations for a new South African constitution should start in 1991 and be finished in two years.
1991 | Moldova formally proclaimed its independence from the USSR.
2003 | The first six-party negotiations were held to find a peaceful solution to the security concerns of the North Korean nuclear weapons programme. Participants were South and North Korea, the United States, China, Japan, and Russia.
2006 | Comair Flight 5191, which was heading to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, crashed as it took off from Lexington, Kentucky’s Blue Grass Airport. 49 out of 50 passengers and crew members were reported dead within hours of the crash.
