Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux has agreed to join Eredivisie side FC Volendam.

Le Roux, 23, is currently the captain and star player of Allsvenskan side Varbergs BoIS, the Swedish top-flight club he joined in February 2020 from SuperSport United.

His long been mooted for a new move with his former coach Joakim Persson stating he’s the best player he’s worked with at the club, but ‘has his price‘.

iDiski Times can now confirm the Dutch outfit, managed by former Ajax Cape Town academy coach Matthias Köhler has agreed to sign the South Africa international midfielder.

It’s a move that was on the cards for the past two seasons, as Sparta Rotterdam flirted with the idea of his services, with Belgian club Cercle Brugge were also keen.

He now moves away from Varbergs, who are firmly in a relegation dogfight this season but have opted to cash in before losing him on a free transfer at the end of their season.

It could prove to be an ideal move for his fledgling career ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast as he looks firmly part of the plans of head coach Hugo Broos.

Le Roux has featured for Varbergs 17 times this season, scoring two goals in the league.

Moments after publishing this story, Le Roux was unveiled as new Volendam player and was hailed by the club’s Technical director Jasper van Leeuwen.

“Luke is the type of player we have been looking for for a long time to complement our midfield,” he told the club’s website.

“He primarily plays from control, but also chooses his moments to get involved in the attack. Luke physically holds his own, has a lot of dynamics, is skilled with the ball and has a good understanding of the game. The best summary [he] is an all-round and box-to-box midfielder.

“Luke has gradually developed into an excellent player in Sweden, who is now also an international player for his country. The fact that he is now coming to Volendam is really an injection of quality for our team.

“In addition, there is also a lot of room for improvement in Luke, so we are looking forward to a great new development trajectory.”
