New Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi has opened up about the hijacking incident he endured in Soweto in February last year.
The keeper was hospitalised along with his brother after they both suffered wounds from the incident when was playing for TS Galaxy.
Buthelezi told iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu in edition 117 of the newspaper that the incident derailed him a little bit when he had just gotten a shot to play. However, he adds that it didn’t affect him mentally, which is why he could pick up where he left off on the pitch when he returned to play.
“It derailed me a lot because I think I had just gotten a chance to play,” Buthelezi told iDiski Times.
“I think I had played three, no four games actually. It was three games in the league and one in the Nedbank Cup but after that, I got hijacked.
“That disturbed me a bit because I was out for two games. It was two weeks but when I got a chance to get back I continued where I left off.
“It didn’t affect me a lot mentally. I had to man up and face everything that was going on at that time.”
Buthelezi, without giving away too many details, also confirmed that the incident happened in Soweto, where he wanted to visit his mother.
“My mother had visited one of my brothers who lives in Soweto,” he added.
“It was after we finished playing in Mpumalanga because my mom was arriving in Soweto on that day.
“So I thought after the game ‘let me go see my mom’, that was when the unfortunate happened.”
