Brilliant Khuzwayo pin points one neglected area in the PSL

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates goalminder Brilliant Khuzwayo has raised a red flag on one area he feels has been neglected by PSL clubs.

Brilliant Khuzwayo is one of the best goalkeepers that played for the two Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

The retired shot-stopper also made significant strides at national team level, where he made 34 appearances for the Under-23 team.

Sadly, he was restricted to only three caps at Bafana Bafana level as he failed to shrug off stiff competition from Itumeleng Khune and the late Senzo Meyiwa.

WHY BRILLIANT KHUZWAYO IS RAISING A RED FLAG

The 33-year-old feels little effort is being put in by PSL clubs to develop new goalkeepers in the country.

In addition, the ex-goalminder, Brilliant Khuzwayo, opines that there will be a crisis in the Bafana set-up if Ronwen Williams is absent.

“I don’t think SA [South Africa] is producing enough goalkeepers. If you look at it, who will take the spot after Ronwen Williams? “It’s important that we need to put serious programs that will be specifically for goalkeepers in South Africa,” Khuzwayo told FARPost.

“I would also put myself to blame if I hadn’t started my own goalkeeping academy that we produce good goalkeepers. That process is a ten-year process. We can’t produce a goalkeeper, there and there. From a ten-year-old, by the time he gets to 15, we know that he will be good for us.

“So we need to find a plan specifically for goalkeepers because it is important, but there are eras in football. 

“After Rowen Fernández, it was Itumeleng Khune’s era, and Brilliant Khuzwayo’s era. Now it’s Ronwen Williams’ era; who else after that?

“It is something that we need to understand that we need to have more goalkeepers. We need people with the right height and with a passion to be in the goalkeeper department,” added Khuzwayo.

PLANS TO START AN ACADEMY

The former Kaizer Chiefs goalie also revealed plans to start his own academy, although it will not be limited to goalkeeping.

“I don’t want to say much; plans are in place, but I want to make sure that by the start of next year, I start my academy,” he revealed to this publication.

“But I will not limit it to goalkeeping. I’ll also link it with school because they need a balance between having an education and football. 

“Not many of us actually get the opportunity to play in the PSL. There are different opportunities in sport without playing. We need to make kids understand that.”
