Pitso Revisits VAR Debate Again

Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has reiterated the need for VAR in the CAF Champions League after their 3-1 win over Al-Merrikh on Friday evening.

Mosimane has been quite vocal this season after several officiating errors across the group stages which he feels can be eradicated with the help of VAR.

The three-time CAF Champions League winner went as far to say that there’s been no change within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) since the controversial Issa Hayatou era – after their defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa last week.

CAF responded to Mosimane’s rant in an interview with iDiski Times but for the fourth time this campaign, Mosimane called for the implementation.

“I will still say it, we need VAR, it’s the fourth time I’m saying it. It’s difficult for referees to manage games like this, it’s too emotional games. You can’t expect the referee to see everything, what can you say? The referees need assistance, they need help

“It’s difficult games, they need VAR, if you have VAR it helps the referee. I’ve never criticised one referee, even in the Egyptian league, I must focus on my team but referees need help. The game is totally different.”

Ahly will face Al Hilal in the final Group A game with a win needed to secure their qualification for the quarter-final stage of Africa’s elite club competition.
