Riveiro Explains Appointment Of Former Yanga Coach

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says the appointment of Helmy Gueldich is part of their progressive approach as a club.

Gueldich arrived as the new strength and conditioning coach after a trophy-laden spell working with Nasreddine Nabi at Young Africans SC, where they won back-to-back domestic trebles.

The Tunisian who holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Science was credited for their impressive fitness and ability to challenge for multiple honours as Yanga also reached the CAF Confederation Cup final last season but fell at the final hurdle to USM Alger.

“The club is looking for improvement in every area… in areas that you know and areas that you don’t know, so that’s normal [to bring in a new conditioning coach],” Riveiro said when asked if the addition of the CAF Champions League and Carling Cup this season prompted the appointment.

“We are part of a club that is looking to permanently develop. We all know the reason why we are there, it’s to help the players to become better, help the team be better and make sure the history of the club improves season after season.

“So we are always looking for opportunities in every department and, yeah, without any exception.”

Pirates face off against Sekhukhune United for their MTN8 quarter-final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (18h00).
