Heartbreak for Springbok wings in French Top 14 final

Toulouse fired late to snatch a dramatic 29-26 win over La Rochelle, who had two Springboks in their ranks, to be crowned French Top 14 champions.

The result sees Toulouse clinch a record-extending 22nd domestic title.

La Rochelle, who had already been crowned European champions this season, were gunning to complete a trophy double and they looked well on course before they were derailed by a late rally from Toulouse.

MATCH RECAP AS SPRINGBOK DUO SUFFER DEFEAT

After a closely contested first half which ended with the scores at 13-13, La Rochelle — who had Springboks Dillyn Leyds and Raymond Rhule as their starting wings — went up 20-13 and then 26-22 in the second half.

And with the clock winding down and Toulouse making one mistake after the other in the final minutes, La Rochelle were on track to secure their maiden French title.

But with his team’s hopes of claiming the coveted piece of silverware, Toulouse flyhalf Romain Ntamack produced to piece of individual brilliance as he broke free from his own half to score the try that turned the match on its heads with two minutes remaining.

Ramos then kicked the conversion with the Toulouse crowd delirious in celebration of their continued dominance of French rugby.
