A tragic incident occurred in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Hurghada, where a Russian man lost his life after being attacked by a shark.
The Environment Ministry confirmed that the man was mauled by a tiger shark near Hurghada’s waters on Thursday.
In response to the incident, authorities have closed off a 74-kilometre (46-mile) stretch of coastline as a safety precaution. A ban on swimming, snorkelling, and other water sports activities will remain in effect until Sunday.
The ministry shared the news of the attack on Facebook, without providing further details. A circulating online video allegedly captures the terrifying moment of the attack, showing the victim struggling in the water as the shark circles and attacks him repeatedly before dragging him under.
Following the incident, the ministry managed to capture the shark believed to be responsible and is currently examining it in a laboratory to understand the reasons behind this rare attack.

The Russian Consulate in Hurghada confirmed the victim’s nationality but did not disclose his name.
According to Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev, the Egyptian authorities confirmed the death of the Russian citizen, who was a permanent resident of Egypt and born in 1999.
Eyewitnesses reported that a diver who arrived shortly after the attack described the unsuccessful attempts of bystanders to reach the victim in time, despite the prompt alert raised by a lifeguard from a nearby hotel.
