Initially these fees were set at R530 but have now been reduced to R330. This represents a 38% reduction in price. This correction brings some relief to cash-strapped motorists and helps rectify any contention around its online booking fee. Previously, a processing and issuing fee led to some confusion. Now a standard R22 booking fee is accurately reflected in the updated schedule.

As announced by the former Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, earlier in the year – going forward, the Department of Transport plans to introduce new digital driving license cards. These will link with Driving License Card Accounts (DLCA). The department says this system will “expedite and simplify the process of obtaining and renewing driving licenses, potentially extending their validity periods.”
The department aims to embrace a departure from paper-based processing and prioritise the rollout of DLCA virtual cards, saying the digital system will be fully online by 2025. This will decrease the average processing time for issuing driver’s licenses from 26 days in 2022 to 10 days by 2025.
