Lyle Lakay will return to Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the 2023/24 season after his loan spell with Cape Town City came to an end.
The 31-year-old was loaned to City by Sundowns at the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign, which surprised many at the time, with even Lakay admitting he didn’t initially expect to leave.
Lakay had just won the DStv Premiership Defender Of The Season and was an instrumental part in the team that won the domestic treble in 2021/22, making 41 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and setting up nine more.
This past season, the 31-year-old left-back played a total number of 19 games for Cape Town City in all competitions and helped the club to finish fourth.
However, Lakay will now return to Sundowns, where he signed a new deal last season and is still under contract.
City, meanwhile, renewed Marc Van Heerden’s deal for one year and this publication understands they are looking to bring in TS Galaxy wing-back Tshegofatso Nyama.
It remains unclear whether Sundowns will loan Lakay out again or whether Rulani Mokwena will find a space for him in his revamped tactical system.
At the time of his departure, Sundowns still had the co-coaching set-up with Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi as co-coaches before the club gave Mokwena the sole head coach role in October.
