My five biggest FLOPS of the PSL season including Kaizer Chiefs

Published

The 2022-23 PSL season is a thing of the past so why not take a look at the biggest flops and underachievers? Yes, spoiler alert, Kaizer Chiefs will feature, there’s a surprise Orlando Pirates player and Andile Jali also gets a mention.

ICYMI: Things just went from bad to worse for Chiefs

Biggest flops of the 2022-23 PSL season

Kaizer Chiefs hit the dirty dozen

Amakhosi tasted defeat 12 times this season. That’s the most losses they’ve ever recorded in a single PSL campaign, and it saw them finish 5th on the log, one spot behind Cape Town City. Something needs to improve at Naturena, and it needs to happen quickly. Chiefs failing to make the CAF Champions League is unacceptable. We know that, you know that and all Amakhosi supporters know that.

Kermit hasn’t croaked for Orlando Pirates

It’s been a decent season for Orlando Pirates, and it could get even better on May 27th, but it’s been an underwhelming campaign for Kermit Erasmus. Yes, he scored against Sundowns in the MTN8 semifinal second leg, and yes, he was on hand to score against Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semifinal, but his DStv Prem antics have been less than convincing, with just one goal in 18 league appearances. That’s the bread and butter. Romeo will be keen to end his season on a high note though against Sekhukhune in another cup final.

It all started so well for Richards Bay

The PSL debutants made a superb start to their maiden campaign in the top-flight, but the way their campaign fell off a cliff in the second half of 2022-23 season will be cause for concern. Perhaps we can judge them properly next season. Still, they were absolutely woeful in 2023, winning just once in 17 league outings since the turn of the year, and that was against relegated and rock-bottom Marumo Gallants.

Mmodi not living up to the hype

Golden Arrows winger Pule Mmodi’s ship might have sailed. He didn’t have a terrible campaign, with six goals and three assists, but fans would have expected more from him with Chiefs and Pirates both keen. He was in the shop window and he didn’t really deliver. Will his big move materialize?

AJ15 went from hero to villain

Andile Jali’s PSL legacy is secure, but his drop-off from last season to this was quite spectacular. He was the 2022 MTN8 Last man Standing, and now Sundowns can’t wait to get rid of him. Still, form is temporary and class is permanent, and it wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see “Gattuso” find his best again. It’s not going to be with the Brazilians though. By his own exceptionally high standards, this was a campaign to forget for Andile Jali, for one reason or another.
