Former Black Leopards striker Coxwell ‘Magic’ Ratshivhadelo says black coaches need to be given more respect than what they are getting currently from club owners, especially from “black-owned teams”.
The former forward spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo in edition 103 of the newspaper about the demise of Black Leopard and what he believes has contributed to Lidoda Duvha’s fall to the amateur ranks.
The Limpopo side’s relegation was confirmed with two rounds to go and they finished the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the bottom of the log with 22 points from 30 matches.
‘Magic’ listed interference as one of the reasons why his former side went down, saying black coaches don’t get as much support as their white counterparts, nor are they as trusted by owners who compromise the product – especially in “black-owned teams”.
“Those black-owned teams, they’ve got a big tendency that whenever it is a white man who is coaching the team, we don’t interfere but when it’s a black man, one of our own, we interfere,” Ratshivhadelo told iDiski Times.
“I still remember when I was playing for Black Leopards and we promoted the team, we were coached by Gavin Hunt. He was managing everything, players, transfers, signings and everything. There was no interference until he left Black Leopards and they started to hire those they can control, you understand? Even Dylan Kerr, he was doing very well when he was at Black Leopards.
“It’s like the white person is our ‘muti’, we give him everything that he needs. Whenever he needs a big player or that player we understand, but when it’s a black person coaching the team, we have a big tendency of controlling.
“It’s happening all over these family-owned teams.”
