Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus has revealed how head coach Jose Riveiro has impressed him during his debut campaign at the club, and it’s not just his efforts on the pitch.
Since his arrival, the Spaniard has led the Buccaneers to the MTN 8 title and the final of the Nedbank Cup, meaning he could end his maiden campaign with a two trophies.
In addition, the Buccaneers are currently also fighting to finish second in the DStv premiership to qualify for the CAF Champions League next season.
Erasmus says what’s even more impressive about his coach is not just his tactical knowledge of the game but also his human side and how he is learning to understand South African football culture and racial dynamics.
“He’s a great human being, a good coach. You know from the start of the season, having to understand how he wants us to play and having our own identity he has been great,” Erasmus told iDiski Times.
“He’s very patient with us as players because not a lot of us understand the tactical side of it. So that helps us improve on that. And you know with the team he has, he’s brought in a lot of courage and motivation for us as teammates, as players.
“Also he’s making an effort to understand the culture of South African football and the players as well, understanding the different dynamics of different races of players, not only the football side but understanding the human being as players as well.
“So, for me, that’s important because it’s a different culture he’s coming to and he’s open to learning. I mean, you cannot fault a coach that’s open to wanting to understand something or a different environment that he is unknown too.
“So he’s been great for us this season and the results have shown that, the position in the league has shown that and we are still in the Nedbank Cup.
“So his work speaks for itself. He’s a great human being, very calm, very positive, and always tries and helps players when needed.”
