Sheppard – Why Zwane Missed Chiefs’ Presser

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard explained why he replaced Arthur Zwane in Saturday’s post-match press conference after their 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United.

Amakhosi lost the battle for third place against former coach Gavin Hunt, whose new side levelled Orlando Pirates on 51 points thanks to their 1-0 win at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Chiefs, meanwhile, now need to focus on securing fourth place, sitting just two points ahead of Cape Town City, who they face on the final day of the season.

However, there were ugly scenes after the match, with head coach Arthur Zwane hit by an object, understood to be a bottle, as per March Gleeson via MTNFC.

As a consequence, Zwane couldn’t take part in the post-match press conference, and was replaced by his assistant, who confirmed the head coach had an injury to his eye, but didn’t know further details.

“Unfortunately he picked up a little bit of an injury to his eye,” he said.

“I don’t know how it happened the incident, I just saw him now putting some ice on his eye. I have to find out the details when I get back to the change room.”

Sheppard also discussed what would be his message to the fans after the club missed out on CAF inter-club football for next season and will finish their eighth campaign without silverware.

“It’s very difficult… You put in the work and you of course you want to show it in performances,” he added.

“They come out in numbers and they’re not happy with what they saw today. It’s only us that can make it right.

“We’ve got to be positive in times like this. We have to draw energy from the positives and like I said we still have fourth-place to play for. We’ve got to look forward to that.”
